Poet and contributing editor Elisa Albo, will conduct this writing workshop based on a presentation from the anthology Grabbed: Poets and Writers on Sexual Assault, Empowerment, and Healing .
Based on a presentation from the recently published anthology Grabbed: Poets and Writers on Sexual Assault, Empowerment, and Healing (Beacon Press), poet and contributing editor Elisa Albo will conduct a writing workshop. This gender-inclusive collection of poems and personal essays addresses what it means to be "grabbed" physically or mentally, whether with a glance, a touch, or an assault. Reading the creative responses of others as well as writing about our own, often singular or numerous, personal events can be cathartic and even healing. Participants will hear and read several examples and then generate their own prose or poetic responses in a safe and understanding format; no one will share their writing unless comfortable doing so. Though not required, participants are encouraged to obtain the anthology and begin reading. Everyone may want to prepare by thinking about or journaling about incidents, seemingly small or large, that may have occurred in childhood, as teens or as adults, at home, at work, or out in the world. Often, contributors to the anthology believed they had no works on the subject or incidents in their past until they were prompted to contribute; all were grateful for the process. Be sure to attend with paper and pen for notes, ideas, and writing.
