The World of Brigadeiro

4241 West Hillsboro BLVD, Coconut Creek

In this poetry workshop series, participants will cover the basic fundamentals of poetry.

Poetry is emotion encapsulated in words, set to the rhythm of the soul. In this series, participants will cover the basic fundamentals of poetry: writing with prompts, how to write from feelings and emotion, and how to explore different structures and wordplay to craft and create impactful, interesting, or just plain fun poetry. Bring pen and paper because at the end of each presentation, Laura will help you launch into writing your own poems.

April 1, 5-6:30 PM in room 235: Composing from Compassion

Putting words on paper helps you make sense of the world around you, express your deepest emotions, create healthy coping strategies for your deep personal needs, or articulate an overwhelming sense of joy. This session will help you become a more active observer of your life, less a bystander, taking note of everything that comes into your field of vision to gain a compassionate understanding of the world around you.

April 10, 5-6:30 PM in room 235: Embracing Grief with Gratitude

Poets often must write to process their experiences and feelings. Nothing can erase grief or speed up the process of healing, but writing can keep you aware as you go through it and offer some solace. Whether you are obsessed with the subject of mortality, or only consider it occasionally, or you contemplate the loss of a relationship, grieving can be a source of moving and illuminating poetry.

April 15, 5-6:30 PM in room 235: Lettering the Love Letter

How do amorous and erotic poems capture what makes a relationship unique while also making our hearts sing? In this workshop, we’ll explore all kinds of love: familial, romantic, passionate, platonic—and discuss how other poets have rendered their thoughts and sentiments. Whether you’re drowning in love or searching for it, come and share your memories and observations about this essential human emotion. By closely reading exemplary poems, we will explore strategies for crafting passionate and precise poems of the various definitions of love.

April 24, 6:30 PM at The World of Brigadeiro: Participant Reading
