The Freedmen's Bureau, established by Congress in 1865, was responsible for the supervision and management of all matters relating to the refugees and freedmen and lands abandoned or seized during the Civil War. The Bureau established a wealth of records which provide practical research tools for genealogy and family history researchers. Learn some of the many resources available in these rich military records. Please register; you can attend in-person or online.
Dr. Ramona La Roche is the Cultural Heritage Informaticist / Librarian Supervisor Adult Information Services at the Broward County African American Research Library and Cultural Center. She earned a Ph.D. in Cultural Heritage Informatics, Communications and Information Science from the University of South Carolina, an M.Ed. in Divergent Learning from Columbia College (South Carolina) and a BFA in Photography, Creative Arts Therapy from the School of Visual Arts.
Dr. La Roche is a seasoned Cultural Heritage professional working with galleries, libraries, archives, museums, repositories, and Digital Humanities projects, Virtual and Augmented Reality platforms. Focusing on South Carolina Gullah, Florida, Caribbean, African diasporic historical and family research, content development, academic/art education/digital literacy, virtual, face to face instruction, and in-services. She is a divergent education specialist providing related faculty, staff, etc. DEI training, and special events.
The Genealogical Society of Broward County (GSBC) meets monthly
