In this 1.5-hour workshop, we’ll explore what defines a short film, why they are a crucial part of the film industry, and how they serve as a powerful storytelling medium. We’ll break down the key components of the process of bringing an idea to life on screen. The presenter will share insights from her own filmmaking journey, introduce her upcoming short film project, and open the floor for a Q&A session. Whether you’re an aspiring filmmaker or just curious about the craft, this workshop will give you the tools and inspiration to start your own cinematic journey!
Samantha Villarroel is a SoFlo writer/producer with a passion to tell latinx matriarchy stories that deserve to be told. She has participated in Sundance 2020, WOCunite mentorship program under Ted Zizik's (BUNK'D), The Latinx Writer's Initiative, and TV Structure Eric Kaplan (Big Bang Theory) and Jeff Howard (Haunting of Hill House) to name a few. By day, she works as a Production Coordinator/Producer with credits in NBCUniversal, Apple+, and Comedy Central. By night, she writes comedy sketches, plays for local theatres, attends musicals, and supports women’s rights. In 2022, she was named writer finalist for NBC's 4th annual Monologue Slam. In 2024, she placed as a writer finalist for Art Prevails Project “ Of House and Home”, directed the world premiere of “As I Eat The World” by Luis Herrera at FAU TheatreLab and was awarded a scholarship to Cynthia Knight’s writing course. Currently, Samantha is a creative fellow for Soho House under the Creative Futures Collective. Additionally, Samantha’s over the moon to be awarded her first artist grant for her short “We Are All Mad Here”.
