ROBERT CROAN is a Senior Editor of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, having retired after 35 years as the Post-Gazette’s classical music critic. He was Professor and Chair of Voice and Opera at Duquesne University’s School of Music, until his retirement in 2000, subsequently teaching at the University of Pittsburgh’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.
He was President of the Music Critics Association of North America (1999-2003) as well as chairman of that organization’s educational activities. He was Pittsburgh and South Florida correspondent for Opera News and has been a judge for the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, the Palm Beach Opera Voice Competition and the Mildred Miller Voice Competition.
He is also the author of articles on cruise ship travel, and a reviewer of crime fiction. Now a full-time Florida resident, he continues to write for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Palm Beach Arts Paper, and lectures on classical music in the South Florida area.
A native New Yorker, Dr. Croan earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Columbia University and a Ph. D. in Musicology from Boston University. He studied singing with legendary Danish tenor Aksel Schiøtz, Metropolitan Opera basso Gerhard Pechner and Claudia Pinza, and performed in master classes with Mildred Miller, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Rose Bampton.
