Celebrate Kwanzaa with the Friends of the West Regional Library and Spelman College women of South Florida. Join us for this vibrant and rich cultural festivity that the entire family will enjoy.
Kwanzaa celebrates family, community and culture. It is an African American and Pan African holiday that was created in 1966 by Professor Dr. Maulana Karenga as a 7-day cultural festival that begins on December 26 and ends January 1. During the holiday, families and communities organize activities based on the Seven Principles (Nguzo Saba): Unity – Umoja, Self-Determination – Kujichagulia, Collective Work and Responsibility - Ujima, Cooperative Economics - Ujamaa, Purpose - Nia, Creativity - Kuumba, and Faith- Imani.
Experience the rhythm and color of tradition with live performances by skilled musicians and drummers on authentic acoustic instruments, accompanied by dynamic dancers in vibrant, eye-catching costumes. The festivities include dance, poetry, storytelling, feasting, and music, and conclude with a recommitment to the Seven Principles.
