Visions In Color Exhibition
Schott Communities is a private, non-profit organization founded in 1986 to address the needs of persons who are deaf or who are physically or intellectually challenged in South Florida. The agency is an extension of the ministry of the Archdiocese of Miami for this special population. It is named for the parents of Joseph J. Schott, Jr., who purchased its "home" in a quasi-rural section of Cooper City, Florida and established the Schott Memorial Foundation to help fund its programs and services.
Unique to Florida, Schott Communities develops residential housing for the deaf or disabled; offers individuals educational programs to promote self-sufficiency; and provides this special population social, recreational and spiritual opportunities to enhance their quality and enjoyment of life. In an environment of caring and dignity, persons who are deaf or disabled are encouraged and challenged to grow in self-acceptance and independence.
Art classes are very popular with clients and very rewarding. Taught by professional artists, the classes provide students a medium of expression that is satisfying and therapeutic. While students learn the techniques of acrylic painting, they similarly learn how color and form convey emotion and feeling. In the classes clients explore their own creative response to the constraints and frustrations of disability; they paint with hands, feet, mouth or headgear - whatever means is available to them.
Stop by to see their "Visions In Color," an exhibition by the very talented students of the Schott Communities. There art teacher is Rachel Alderton.
This exhibition is May 1st until June 12th, it is part of our Summer Learning Program "Color Our World."
