Women Making STEAM invites women/women-identifying professionals to share their impacts and research contributions in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, or Math (STEAM).
Picture This: Imaging Surfaces of the Earth, Moon, & Mars
Cameras help us capture everyday moments of our lives. However, in the exploration of space, images become critical to understanding the surfaces of other worlds. Images can be used for science observations and to inspire the public. Dr. Marie Henderson is a lunar scientist using cameras for science observations of the Earth, Moon, and Mars. Come learn about how scientists prepare for and take images of other planetary bodies.
Dr. Marie Henderson (she/her) is a planetary scientist with the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD and the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Originally from Hermitage, PA, Dr. Henderson earned an undergraduate degree in Solar, Earth, and Planetary Science from the Florida Institute of Technology and a doctoral degree in Planetary Sciences from Purdue University. She studies volcanic landscapes on the Earth, Moon, and Mars using an orbit-to-outcrop research methodology. Previously, Dr. Henderson was employed at a spacecraft camera company, Malin Space Science Systems, and is interested in how cameras and astronauts will capture images of planetary surfaces. Dr. Henderson was a member of the Mars Curiosity Rover team and a member of the Heimdall Camera System team that will land on the Moon in the future. Dr. Henderson strives to prepare astronauts and robotic missions to explore and study volcanic surfaces when they return to the Moon through conducting scientific and operations field campaigns at planetary analogs across the Earth.
