A good night’s rest can make you happier and healthier. Sleep is just as important for your overall health as going to the gym and eating the right foods. In fact, your quality of sleep is a key factor in healthy aging. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society recommend adults sleep 7 or more hours each night on a regular basis to promote optimal health. Despite the universality and importance of sleep, there is a high prevalence of insufficient sleep in the modern world. The average sleep duration of American adults has decreased from 8 hours to 6 hours over the last century, and 1 in 3 people report sleeping less than 6 hours per night during the work week. Normal, healthy aging is associated with changes in sleep quality and duration. Older adults have more nighttime awakenings, report shorter overall duration, and have decreased deep sleep compared to younger adults. In fact, a reduction in deep sleep is apparent in people as young as 35 years of age. Older adults are also at a greater risk for sleep disorders such as insomnia and sleep apnea.
