Join the Youth Quilt Making Club: Hidden Threads and explore history, art, and family stories through quilting.
This interactive program combines history, art, and genealogy to immerse youth in learning about the Underground Railroad, ancient civilizations, and family heritage. Participants will:
Learn about historical quilt patterns used as coded messages, connecting these to symbols in ancient civilizations.
Explore family history and genealogy as a means of preserving stories across generations.
Engage in hands-on quilt-making, creating quilt squares that reflect both historical and personal narratives.
The session emphasizes creativity, scholarship, and accessibility. Materials, visual references, and genealogical prompts will be provided so participants of all skill levels can engage meaningfully. This program reveals the hidden threads that connect past to present, history to personal stories, and art to identity.
- Teach youth about quilts’ role in the Underground Railroad and symbolic communication.
- Introduce basic quilt-making techniques and foster creative expression.
- Explore symbols in ancient civilizations and connect them to personal and family stories.
- Encourage youth to explore quilting and genealogy books to discover family history and build cultural awareness, historical literacy, and critical thinking skills.
