Program Overview
New Canon Chamber Collective proposes The Sound of Legacy: Black Composers in Classical Music, a chamber music program celebrating the creativity and historical impact of Black composers within the classical tradition. Performed by a professional string quartet or quintet, the program will feature works by composers whose music reflects the breadth and evolution of Black musical expression. Through live performance and contextual storytelling, audiences will experience compositions that bridge spiritual traditions, folk influences, and contemporary classical writing.
Following the performance, artists will participate in a facilitated post-concert conversation, offering audiences the opportunity to learn more about the composers, their cultural impact, and the role Black composers have played in shaping classical music. This program aligns with the mission of the African American Research Library and Cultural Center by connecting scholarship, history, and artistic expression through live performance and dialogue.
