Emilie: Leaving The Life I Loved is a title that very directly tells a story repeated among the many lives torn apart during World War II, when the familiar comforts of home spiraled into a Nazi nightmare, and the need to summon terrific courage became critical to fleeing capture following Hitler’s invasion of Austria. Written by author Susan Grossman, the fictionalized, 312-page book, based on her mother’s true story, captivates in its portrayal of lives upended. The saga begins with new love, marriage and a child, unfolds into the horrors of World War II and the tumult, fear, and masterminding of an ingenious way to escape Nazi-occupied Vienna through Germany, with Nazis at every turn. How they carry out their escape plan will stun the reader.
