AARLCC invites local residents to participate in oral history recording sessions dedicated to The 20th of May—Florida’s Emancipation Day on May 20-21, 2025.
Join us in preserving history by sharing your story! The African American Research Library and Cultural Center and Broward County Library's Special Collection Division invite local residents to participate in oral history recording sessions dedicated to The 20th of May—Florida’s Emancipation Day on May 20-21, 2025. Whether you have personal memories of celebrating this historic occasion, stories passed down through generations, or insights into its significance, your voice is vital in keeping this legacy alive.
On May 20, 1865, enslaved people in Florida learned of their freedom—two years after the Emancipation Proclamation and one month after the conclusion of the US Civil War. For generations, communities across the state have commemorated this day with parades, music, and reflection. We want to hear from you if you or your family have traditions tied to this important milestone.
These recordings will become part of AARLCC's permanent archive, ensuring that the voices and experiences of those who honor Florida’s Emancipation Day are preserved for future generations. Don’t miss this opportunity to contribute to history!
