The Business Behind Your Story, a four-part course, which includes a monthly online class and online follow-up meet-up/critique.
The African American Research Library and Cultural Center in collaboration with MD Simmons Productions, LLC and the Friends of the African American Research Library and Cultural Center are pleased to present, Lifting & Advancing Black Business: Representation on Screen - The Business Behind Your Story. This is a four-part course, which includes a monthly online class and online follow-up meet-up/critique beginning Wednesday, May 5, 2021, at 10 am.
Participants at all levels and stages of entrepreneurship can learn how to create great videos that can help take a company or project to the next level. Explore new tools to "Lift and Advance" your business and find out how to maximize your existing techniques and progress towards using professional-level equipment.
In addition to an online two-hour class session held monthly from May through August, there will be an online follow-up meet-up & critique. These follow-up events reinforce important concepts covered in the classes, use constructive feedback to help attendees develop their creative style and critical eye for detail, and utilize concepts of action and accountability to ensure participants a positive and beneficial learning experience.
Part 1 - “5 Senses of Your Brand” Instructed by M. Denise Simmons – Wednesday, May 5, 2021, 10 - 12 pm
Description: Using the 5 senses (vision, hear, taste, touch, and smell), we will provide students a foundational understanding of their purpose as an individual/future filmmaker and their business.
Meet Up & Critique: Wednesday, May 19, 2021 10 – 11 am
Part 2 – Understanding Cinematography Instructed by Deon Gedeon – Wednesday, June 2, 2021, 10 - 12 pm
Description: Helping students to understand the basic skills of the art of photography and visual storytelling in a motion picture or television show. They will learn some visual elements, such as lighting, framing, composition, camera motion, camera angles, zoom, focus, and color.
Meet Up & Critique: Wednesday, June 16, 2021, 10 – 11 am
Part 3 – “The Art of Storytelling” Instructed by Aisha Louis – Wednesday, July 7, 2021, 10 - 12 pm
Description: Students will learn the important components of storytelling, what it means to OWN your story, and the importance of telling OUR story in the film industry and marketplace.
Meet Up & Critique: Wednesday, Jul 21, 2021, 10 – 11 am
Part 4 – “Your Story is Your Business” Instructed by M. Denise Simmons – Wednesday, August 4, 2021, 10 - 12 pm
Description: Strategies on how to bring awareness to your story, engage people for partnerships/collaborations, and how to make a living
Meet Up & Critique: Wednesday, August 18, 2021, 10 – 11 am
Following "Representation on Screen: The Business Behind Your Story " AARLCC will host LABB"s companion "Digital Humanities Course: Videography." Beginning in September 2021, the class will cover how films address and engage disparate subject matters across media, language, location, and also how they impact Black history.
