Genealogy Meet-Up Series: Tracing Your Roots
The intention is to educate attendees on the basics of researching their family histories. Participants will learn basic genealogy vocabulary, discuss how to get started, obtain organizational tools, acquire effective online communication techniques, and learn about research basics and vital records such as birth, church, marriage, and death certificates. Other sessions will provide attendees workshops on topics like family heirlooms, memoirs, military records, and government documents such as the National Archives, Library of Congress, ethnic family history websites, medical genealogy, the National Afro American Historical and Genealogical Society, the Genealogical Society of Broward County, History Ft. Lauderdale, Library of Florida State, local historical societies, supportive BCL resources include Ancestry.com library edition, https://www.genealogytoday.com/genealogy/states/florida.html, https://www.broward.org/Library/Research/Pages/History-Genealogy-Biography.aspx, ), etc. as well as global sites which include but are not limited to Caribbean, United Kingdom (British Library).
Sept. 9 - Gen 101
Participants will learn basic genealogy vocabulary, discuss how to get started, obtain organizational tools, acquire effective online communication techniques, and learn about research basics and vital records such as birth, church, marriage, and death certificates. Additional time will be set aside for returning patrons to share their summer discoveries.
Sept. 23 – Virtual Genealogy Clinic
Participants will attend to discuss progress of their personal genealogy research. Sharing, Q & As, and FAQs will be addressed.
Oct. 7 – Health Literacy
Attendees will explore the relationship between health and genealogy. Patrons will consider fundamental basics of medical genealogy as they examine family health histories, lifestyles, habits and behaviors.
Nov. 4 - Cemetery Research
Participants will explore cemetery and vital records such as death certificates, military records, and online support tools available for historical family history research.
Nov. 18 - Virtual Genealogy Clinic
Participants will attend to discuss progress of their personal genealogy research. Sharing, Q & As, and FAQs will be addressed.
Dec, 2 – Holiday Traditions: Foodways for the Soul
Attendees will explore significance of foodways in family history and research as they consider roles that recipes, family heirlooms, and memoirs play in their personal explorations of their kin.
Jan. 13, 2024 – Family Resolutions
Patrons will examine principles of Ma'at and the strength of their family institutions based on genealogy findings.
About the African American Research Library and Cultural Center
The Broward County African American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC) is located in the Sistrunk community, one of the oldest historically Black communities named for one of Fort Lauderdale’s first Black physicians. Opening to the public on October 26, 2002, AARLCC became the third public library of its kind in the United States dedicated to the study of Black history and culture. The 60,000 square-foot Center serves as a repository of materials related to the local, national, and international voices of the African diaspora with more than 85,000 books, manuscripts, artifacts, framed art, print, photography, audiovisual, and documents held in our Adult Services Section and Special Collections. The Youth Services Section features a special collection of Coretta Scott King Award books and the Ashley Bryan Art Collection from illustrators of African Descent. AARLCC also features a 5,000 sq. ft. museum, a 300-seat state-of-the-art theatre, and a Computer Training Center.
