Artist statement:
My work is a reflection on the capacity for abstract images to reimagine memories. I employ cyanotypes and alternative processes of photography to expand upon themes of family history, body positivity, and spiritual connection. Growing up in South Florida has shaped my attraction to the brilliant blue of the photographic prints, and I am reminded of the nearby deep blue of the ocean. In previous work, I have used found images from my grandmother’s archive and pictures from my cellphone to connect various timelines in an attempt to connect to her spirit. Through portraiture, I document moments in my family’s history, such as having my 10-year-old niece pose as if she were still interested in swinging on the swing in my parents’ front yard. I am continually looking for ways to hold on to flashes in time that bring a comforting sense of home and nostalgia to our family.
My practice continues to explore themes of place (specifically Miami, where I grew up) in an attempt to reclaim and uplift the history and present lived experience of my birthplace. Due to ongoing gentrification and climate change, it has become more urgent for me to think about how important it is to archive my relationship with the city in my work before it is forgotten or erased.
