On March 15, 1972, Francis Ford Coppola directed what many consider the greatest American film - perhaps challenged only by the sequel released two years later. Based on the Mario Puzo novel that traced the fortunes of the Corleone crime family, The Godfather was nominated for 11 Oscars, picking up three for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor (Marlon Brando in a legendary performance). Actress Talia Shire appears in both The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather: Part II (1974), and The Godfather: Part III (1990). She is also known for her performance in Rocky (1976).
