In celebration of Ashley Bryan's 99th Birthday (July 13th), you are invited to a special Art in the Summer session with Kaylani Juanita - award winning children's book illustrator! Kaylani will lead us in a fun and creative art lesson. She will be there virtually and we will be set up in the library with all materials at hand. Registration is limited so reserve your seat early! Session takes place in the Youth Services Section on the second floor.
About the Ashley Bryan Art in the Summer Series
The Ashley Bryan Art in the Summer Series is a lead-in to the 20th Annual Ashley Bryan Art Series Festival to be held Saturday, October 1, 2022. The Art in the Summer series aims to encourage reading and creativity throughout the summer. The Ashley Bryan Art Series Festival will feature interactive art and crafting stations, live performances, music, food and art sessions with Jerry Craft who will be joining us live and Kaylani Juanita who will join us virtually. Other surprise guests are being scheduled, so stay tuned!
About Kaylani Juanita

Kaylani Juanita is an illustrator based in Fairfield, CA who illustrates inclusive picture books, editorial art, and afros. Some of her clients include Chronicle Books, Cicada Magazine, and DEFY. Her work has been recognized by Society of Illustrators, The Huffington Post, as well as BBC.
She is the illustrator of the picture books Ta-Da! and A House for Every Bird, the winner of the ALA Stonewall Book Award for When Aidan Became a Brother and is a Coretta Scott King 2021 Honoree for the book Magnificent Homespun Brown: A Celebration. She will be dropping several books in an early reader series through Scholastic this spring. About the African American Research Library and Cultural Center
The Broward County African American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC) is located in the Sistrunk community, one of the oldest historically Black communities named for one of Fort Lauderdale’s first Black physicians. Opening to the public on October 26, 2002, AARLCC became the third public library of its kind in the United States dedicated to the study of Black history and culture. The 60,000 square-foot Center serves as a repository of materials related to the local, national, and international voices of the African diaspora with more than 85,000 books, manuscripts, artifacts, framed art, print, photography, audiovisual, and documents held in our Adult Services Section and Special Collections. The Youth Services Section features a special collection of Coretta Scott King Award books and the Ashley Bryan Art Collection from illustrators of African Descent. AARLCC also features a 5,000 sq. ft. museum, a 300-seat state-of-the-art theatre, and a Computer Training Center.
