In this introduction to poetry, Alexandra will introduce attendees to the art and craft of writing poetry, beginning with emotion.

In this introduction to poetry, Alexandra will introduce attendees to the art and craft of writing poetry, beginning with emotion. Attendees will learn key elements of poetry, such as alliteration, rhyme and rhythm, figurative language, and symbolism, as well as some common poetic forms, like the abecedarian, Where I'm From poem, haiku, and narrative poem. Finally, attendees will spend some time brainstorming and creating their own poems, which they can share with others.
ALEXANDRA ALESSANDRI is the award-winning author of several books for children, including Feliz New Year, Ava Gabriela!, Isabel and Her Colores go to School, The Enchanted Life of Valentina Mejía, Our World Colombia, Lupita’s Hurricane Palomitas, and Grow Up, Luchy Zapata. Her short story-in-verse, "Kaleidoscope," was recently published in the YA anthology All the Love Under the Vast Sky. The daughter of Colombian immigrants, she is also an educator, a writer for Curriculum Associates, and a poet, with some of her work appearing in The Acentos Review, Rio Grande Review, Atlanta Review, and Young Adult Review Network.
