One thing you don't want readers to do is set your book down after reading a couple of pages.
Even if they can't finish your short story, novel, or memoir in one sitting, you want readers to look forward to getting back to your story. One way to ensure this happens is to excite and/or delight the mind and heart on every page. It may seem daunting, but in this workshop we'll take a look at how successful writers use micro-tension, figurative language, relatable insights, humor, and more to lock in the attention of readers.
DORIAN CIRRONE, a former journalist, has published novels, short stories, poems, and nonfiction for children, teens, and adults. Her middle-grade novel, The First Last Day (published by Simon & Schuster), won a Florida Book Award gold medal and was translated into four languages. School Library Journal called it, “A heartfelt novel loaded with wonderful character development.” Her young adult novel, Dancing in Red Shoes Will Kill You (published by HarperCollins), was an American Library Association Popular Paperback for Young Adults and a New York Public Library Best Books for the Teen Age. She holds an M.A. in English and has taught writing on the university level as well as at numerous conferences and workshops. She is currently writing a psychological suspense novel and is trying to follow her own advice to engage her readers on every page.
