walls turned sideways are bridges disrupts, illuminates and reframes images and materials within a historical context in response to the social phenomenon surrounding "Black Resistance," which is the theme for Black History Month, established by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.
The exhibition focuses on the evolution of radical community activist movements that became prominent in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Through organizations like the Black Panther Party, The Young Lords Party, Brown Berets, the American Indian Movement and others, young people became the vanguard for social change felt nationally and globally.
In addition to documentary photos, the exhibition will include ephemera in the form of foreign books, pamphlets, vintage buttons, pins, historical mainstream newspapers, flyers, t-shirts, vinyl records and posters. This exhibition is curated by Marie Vickles, Director of Education at the Pérez Art Museum Miami, and william cordova, an interdisciplinary cultural practitioner and Guggenheim Museum Fellow.
Accompanying the exhibition will be a series of free public programs. Additional information will be forthcoming.
An opening reception featuring a meet-and-greet with the curators takes place at AARLCC from 6 to 8PM on Thursday, February 2, 2023. Registration required: https://broward.libnet.info/event/7760340
