The examination of two significant appearances by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in St. Augustine, FL in 1964. This program is part of Broward County Libraries 50th Anniversary series.

These crucial moments ignited a series of impactful events, including marches, arrests, and intense confrontations between protesters and law enforcement. Dr. J. Michael Butler, professor of history at Flagler College, will unveil the intricate dynamics between local and national objectives, offering a deeper understanding of their interplay.

J. Michael Butler, a historian specializing in 20th century Southern Cultural History and the Civil Rights movement, holds a B.A. in History from Spring Hill College, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude as a President's Scholar. He earned his Master's and Doctorate from the University of Mississippi, learning from esteemed authorities in the field. Dr. Butler taught at South Georgia College before joining Flagler College in 2008, where he designed courses on Southern History, African American History, Cultural History, and the Florida Civil Rights Movement. His scholarly work has been featured in prestigious publications, including The Journal of American Studies, The Journal of Southern History, The Florida Historical Quarterly, and Southern Cultures. His book, "Beyond Integration: The Black Freedom Struggle in Escambia County, Florida, 1960-1980," won a 2017 Florida Book Award. Dr. Butler has engaged with numerous teacher and community groups, discussing the relevance of history in the ongoing pursuit of racial justice. His current project explores the St. Augustine Confederate obelisk and its construction, meaning, and eventual removal, influenced by his involvement with the city's Monument Contextualization Committee in 2019.

The Scholars Speaker Series, developed in celebration of the library’s 50th Anniversary, focuses on challenging issues facing Broward County. By leveraging the library's expertise and collaborating with humanities scholars, subject matter experts, and community organizations, the library aims to create an engaging and inclusive set of events that embrace diverse perspectives, honor heritage, and strive for equality, justice, and empowerment.
