“Presidents and Their First Ladies, dramatically speaking” is the creation of the veteran acting and writing team of husband and wife, William and Sue Wills.
Jerry Ford had one goal - to be elected by his Congressional peers as Speaker of the House of Representatives. Ironically, he did not achieve this dream, but he did become the first unelected Vice-President and President of the United States. Ford’s honesty and forthrightness helped to heal the nation after the Watergate scandals.
Betty Ford was maybe our nation’s most outspoken First Lady and many of the topics she spoke about caused her husband political difficulties, like her support for ERA and the Roe vs Wade decision. But her speaking out on her personal difficulties such as breast cancer and alcohol and medicinal drugs addiction brought these topics to the forefront and saved many people’s lives.
A Deerfield Beach Percy White Library tradition for decades, “Presidents and Their First Ladies, dramatically speaking”
is the creation of the veteran acting and writing team of husband and wife, William and Sue Wills. After 20 years of operating their own theatrical company in the resort of Ocean City, MD, the couple is now in their 28th year of bringing to life the stories of 36 different Presidential couples. Amazingly, the Wills have appeared together on stage over 9,400 times…and still counting. They are not “impersonators”, but hope that their costumes, dialects, and demeanors will help recreate these historical characters.
Mr. and Mrs. Wills have performed in 36 of our 50 states and have given over 30 performances at seven of the nation’s Presidential Museums. They are a true working team with William researching and creating the scripts while Sue edits his work and creates the costumes, many of her own design
With their “Presidents and First Ladies” program, William and Sue hope that by presenting the personal side of our first couples, they will become more than just names read about in history books.
