June 9: Like Water for Chocolate (Mexico) -- Tradition holds back the youngest of three Mexican daughters from marrying the man that she loves. In an attempt to stay closer together, her beloved marries the young woman's sister and it is then that a magical and unique secret is discovered through her cooking. 114 min. June 16: Life is Beautiful (Italy) -- A charming but bumbling waiter who's gifted with a colorful imagination and an irresistible sense of humor has won the heart of the woman he loves and has created a beautiful life for his young family. Then that life is threatened by World War II. 116 min. Italian w/English subtitles.
June 23: Parasite (South Korea) -- Masterminded by college-aged Ki-woo, the Kim children expediently install themselves as tutor and art therapist to the Parks. Soon, a symbiotic relationship forms between the two families. The Kims provide “indispensable” luxury services while the Parks give the Kims a way out of their shabby circumstances. But this new ecosystem is fragile, and soon enough greed and class prejudice threaten to upend the Kims’ newfound comfort. 132 min. Korean w/English subtitles.
June 30: Day for Night (France) -- Frictions and personality clashes beset the making of a romantic film in Nice. 116 min. French w/English subtitles.
July 7: City of God (Brazil) Based on the novel by Paolo Lin. Gangland violence sweeps the slums of Rio de Janeiro in the 1960s and '70s, when shifting alliances result in a brutal gang war, which is documented on film by an amateur photographer. 133 min. Portuguese w/English subtitles.
July 14: The Lady Vanishes (United Kingdom) -- Vintage Hitchcock about an elderly English governess who disappears from a train, a fact that doesn't particularly concern other passengers except for a young lady she'd befriended and who's become convinced that something is amiss. 97 min.
July 21: Das Boot (Germany) -- The crew aboard a WWII German submarine must contend with poor conditions, long stretches of inactivity, fierce storms and thunderous battles. A correspondent observes their daily life, while their captain struggles to maintain morale and his own motivation. Based on the novel by Lothar G. Buchheim. 150 min. German w/English subtitles.
July 28: Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (Japan) -- Crisply paced adventure with stunning animation but a convoluted story, chronicling the sci-fi space-capades of futuristic bounty hunters who patrol the galaxy in a banged-up spaceship called the Bebop. Based on a popular Japanese anime series. Voices include Wendee Lee, Daran Norris, Melissa Fahn. Also known as “Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door.” 107 min.
August 4: The Sea Inside (Spain) -- This involving rumination on life and death is the fact-based story of a Spanish quadriplegic (Javier Bardem) battling for the right to die. Won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. 125 min. Spanish w/English subtitles.
August 11: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Sweden) -- Discredited journalist Mikael Blomkvist and mysterious computer hacker Lisbeth Salander work together to solve the mystery of a 40-year-old murder and uncover the dark secrets of a wealthy family. 158 min.
