Children will explore the relationship between our Solar System and our Galaxy and launch a rocket using elasticity. Sponsored by the Broward Public Library Foundation.
Students work together in STEAM Teams to promote kindness and unity in working with others to complete the challenge and practice public speaking and communication skills when sharing their designs. During each lesson, students visit a cross-curricular destination, and engage in collaborative, inquiry-based, student-driven learning grounded in real-world connections, meaningful problem-solving, and social-emotional learning. Each destination/ lesson uses collaboration, problem solving and the Challenge Island STEAM building steps to engineer and build using the materials provided.
Wonder Galaxy- Students will listen to We're All Wonders. We will discuss the fundamental themes of Wonder, including empathy, tolerance, acceptance, and choosing kindness. STEAM Teams will differentiate between the terms Ordinary and Unique, build self-confidence and self- acceptance by recognizing themselves as “wonders”. The students will also explore the relationship between our Solar System and our Galaxy. They will collaborate and use teamwork to build a rocket. The challenge will be to launch a rocket using elasticity and adjust the launch angle of the rocket to hit a target.
