Teens will learn about Basketball player Kobe Bryant and identify what it takes to get the ball in the hoop & build catapults for the challenge. Sponsored by the Broward Public Library Foundation.
Students work together in STEAM Teams to promote kindness and unity in working with others to complete the challenge and practice public speaking and communication skills when sharing their designs. During each lesson, students visit a cross-curricular destination, and engage in collaborative, inquiry-based, student-driven learning grounded in real-world connections, meaningful problem-solving, and social-emotional learning. Each destination/ lesson uses collaboration, problem solving and the Challenge Island STEAM building steps to engineer and build using the materials provided.
Kobe's Court- Students will learn about the inspiring life of Basketball player Kobe Bryant, the NBA, and WNBA while understanding the concepts of stored energy and elasticity. Students will be introduced to some of the projects Kobe advocated for as an ambassador for change and understand the importance of teamwork and community. Students will learn about murals as a form of art and explore various mural ideas and connect them to their own team projects. Students will identify what it takes to get the ball into the hoop and build catapults to complete the challenge. After the catapults are designed and built, teams will collaborate to develop their own mural for their community basketball courts. Teams will design and build their arenas and then present to the whole group.
