Combating Anti-Immigrant Rhetoric
Join us for a powerful conversation as we confront the damaging rhetoric aimed at Black immigrants, particularly the Haitian community, in light of recent derogatory remarks by former national leaders. Sponsored by South Florida People of Color (SFPoC) and the African American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC) through our Unity360 Community Dialogue and AARLCC Cultural Conversations series, and made possible by a grant from the Community Foundation of Broward, this important event will explore the history, challenges, and opportunities facing Black immigrants, particularly Haitians, in South Florida.
This event will be live-streamed on YouTube and Facebook.
Panel Discussion: Uniting Against Xenophobia
Moderated by Dr. Tameka Bradley Hobbs, the panel features influential leaders from legal, civic, and cultural sectors who will dive into the intersections of race and immigration, and provide strategies to combat harmful stereotypes and build solidarity across Black communities.
Featured Panelists:
· Nancy Metayer Bowen, Coral Springs Commissioner, Seat 3
· Bacardi L. Jackson, Executive Director, ACLU of Florida
· Shaheewa Jarrett Gelin, Esq., President, Broward County Black Chamber of Commerce
· Djenane Gourgue, President, Haitian American Chamber of Commerce
The event will kick off with an engaging icebreaker, followed by a thought-provoking panel discussion, audience Q&A, and a call to action for solidarity and advocacy. This is more than just a conversation—it's an opportunity to foster unity, challenge divisive rhetoric, and support the Black immigrant community.
