Author of the book, “Black Immigrant Literacies: Intersections of Race, Language, and Culture in the Classroom,” Dr. Patriann Smith discusses her “why” for writing and the exciting moments from the lives of Black immigrant and transnational youth that she most enjoys sharing in this groundbreaking scholarly work. She will share examples of practical approaches presented in the book that help to silence the invisibility of Black students, teachers, educators, and peoples at large.
Bio:
Dr. Patriann Smith is a distinguished scholar and educator specializing in language and literacy. She holds a position at the University of South Florida and her extensive academic journey includes a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction, with a concentration in Literacy Studies specializing in Multilingual Education, and an MEd in Reading Education. She also holds a BSc in Elementary Education and an A.A. in Elementary Teacher Training. With a diverse career, she has served in professorial roles across various prestigious institutions, including the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and the University of South Florida. Her research focuses on the intersection of race, language, and immigration, with an emphasis on transculturally, transracially, and translinguistically responsive literacy and assessment practices with a dedication to diversity and equity evident through her leadership roles, numerous awards, and active involvement in academic organizations. Among her extensive body of research is the article, “How Does a Black Person Speak English?”: Beyond American Language Norms.” Dr. Smith is author of the book Black Immigrant Literacies: Intersections of Race, Language and Culture in the Classroom (2023), co-author of the book Affirming Black Students’ Lives and Literacies: Bearing Witness (2023) and co-editor of the book Educating African Immigrant Youth: Schooling and Civic Engagement in K–12 Schools (in press). Her scholarship is characterized by a commitment to creating positive change and advancing equity in education.
