A Lifting and Advancing Black Business (LABB) event celebrating Women’s History month focusing on Women of Color operating businesses in South Florida.
The National Women's History Alliance designates a yearly theme for Women's History Month. The 2023 theme is "Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories." This theme recognizes "women, past and present, who have been active in all forms of media and storytelling including print, radio, TV, stage, screen, blogs, podcasts, news, and social media. To this end our program seeks to expose and educate attendees to the myriad of possibilities for the upliftment of south Florida Women in businesses related to arts, humanities, and various narratives. After all, we know that it is our stories that connect us all as amazing humans.
Our featured speakers include Marie Gill of the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA). The center is operated by M. Gill & Associates, Inc. Other panelists will include Andrea Johnbaptiste, management consultant, skilled in public relations and social media, Dr. Candace Cunningham, public historian, both of Florida Atlantic University, and Shaheewa Jarrett Gelin, Esq., President of the Broward County Black Chamber of Commerce. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Ramona La Roche, Supervisor of Adult Services at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center.
About the African American Research Library and Cultural Center
The Broward County African American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC) is located in the Sistrunk community, one of the oldest historically Black communities named for one of Fort Lauderdale’s first Black physicians. Opening to the public on October 26, 2002, AARLCC became the third public library of its kind in the United States dedicated to the study of Black history and culture. The 60,000 square-foot Center serves as a repository of materials related to the local, national, and international voices of the African diaspora with more than 85,000 books, manuscripts, artifacts, framed art, print, photography, audiovisual, and documents held in our Adult Services Section and Special Collections. The Youth Services Section features a special collection of Coretta Scott King Award books and the Ashley Bryan Art Collection from illustrators of African Descent. AARLCC also features a 5,000 sq. ft. museum, a 300-seat state-of-the-art theatre, and a Computer Training Center.
