From the arrival of the first Jewish community in New Amsterdam in 1654, to the present day, perceptions of how Jews in America "became white folk" is often counter to the reality of Jewish life in America. To appreciate the transition from ostracized immigrant to integral part of American life it is important to look at the winding road that shaped the modern American Jewish community almost 400 years later.
