Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, discover the beauty, artistry, and cultural significance of traditional Japanese clothing in this captivating presentation by the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. This program offers an in‑depth look at the many styles of attire worn throughout Japan’s history, highlighting how clothing reflects social customs, ceremony, and seasonal traditions.
A representative of the Morikami Museum will make this presentation and show various styles of traditional kimonos. Attendees will be introduced to a range of garments, including the elegant wedding kimono, the refined formal kimono, and the lightweight summer kimono. The presentation also explores everyday and specialty wear such as the yukata (a casual summer kimono), jinbei (comfortable warm‑weather wear), and hakama (traditional pleated trousers or skirt‑like garments). Through vivid explanations and authentic examples, attendees will gain a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship, symbolism, and cultural heritage woven into each piece.
