103, Multipurpose RoomAs we prepare to celebrate the country's 250 anniversary, join local historian and author Susan Gillis as she discusses how to write local history.

Susan Gillis is a museum curator and local historian with over 50 years of experience in the museum profession. A native Floridian, she has a B.A. in History and Anthropology from the College of William and Mary and an M.A. in Anthropology from the University of Denver. She has served as Curator at the Boca Raton Historical Society & Museum since 2002 and is the former Curator of the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society. She is the author of eight books on local history: Images of America: Fort Lauderdale (1999); Fort Lauderdale in Vintage Postcards (2004); Fort Lauderdale: The Venice of America (2004); Broward County: The Photography of Gene Hyde (2005); Historic Photos of Fort Lauderdale (2007); Boomtime Boca: Boca Raton in the 1920s (2007); Dream City: A Pictorial History of Boca Raton (2025); and coauthor of Palm Beach County in World War II (2015). Ms. Gillis also acts as an instructor and freelance consultant to local historical and cultural agencies and serves as historical consultant and volunteer archivist for the City of Oakland Park, Florida. She was recognized by the American Association for State and Local History with an Award of Merit in 2006 and was the recipient of the 2004 Cooper Kirk Award from the Broward County Historical Commission. She received the 2006 President’s Award from the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society for her local history publications and research and was recognized by the Society of Florida Archivists with the Award of Excellence in 2018.
