Juneteenth (June 19th) commemorates the effective end of slavery in the U.S., celebrating when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation and free over 250,000 enslaved African Americans, marking a delayed but significant moment of freedom for the last enslaved people in the Confederacy.
