Be Alive through Music in celebration of Juneteenth, Black Music Month & Pride!
Broward County Library and The African American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC) will begin an annual tradition of celebrating Juneteenth with an experience called Be Alive through Music (BAM)! This project is presented by AARLCC in collaboration with The Broward Black Elected Officials (BBEO), Buy Black South Florida, and supported by the Friends of AARLCC.
June is Black Music Month, and on the 11th together we will Be Alive through Music and explore how our world and music has enabled us to transcend the hardships of life but also rejoice in the victories. Black Music Month celebrates African American musical influences that are an essential part of our nation's treasured heritage. Moreover dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that those enslaved in Texas were now free. Also known as Freedom Day, Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.
Music sets us free and tells a story of life and freedom. This signature AARLCC Friday Night at the Library Event will explore all that was taken, lost, gained, and celebrated throughout the years and the relevance in celebrating Juneteenth and music. Together we will experience a celebration of Black Freedom and the genre of Rhythm & Blues (R&B), which has roots in other Black music art forms like jazz, blues and gospel music. The soulful universality of R&B has helped to spread a message of love, humanity, and perhaps even racial harmony over the airwaves and in main stream society. As we celebrate musical unity we invite you to enjoy a night of virtual discussions, history, dancing. The musical sounds of Deep Fried Funk Band will showcase our musical heritage and our influence on music… BAM, its Juneteenth!
